Craft supplies
There is a large range of possibilities under this heading. The enthusiasts of this craft or that — knitting, jewellery making, pottery, leatherwork, marquetry, painting, toy making, modelling etc — have a continuing need for the raw materials of their crafts, appropriate craft tools and books on the subject. Few people live within easy reach of a shop that can cater for the needs of their particular craft, and it is this that gives such products their mail order appeal. Books
Many people live within reach of a bookshop, and most people live within reach of a shop selling books, but shops of both kinds necessarily cater for the general interest. It is very difficult for the mail order bookseller to compete with the shops for the sale of the most popular titles; Continue reading Why Sell Books and Calculators?…

Bicycles
The bicycle as a means of cheap and healthy transport has greatly increased in popularity in recent years. Even so, specialist bicycle shops are not numerous, and mail order is worth considering as a retailing method, particularly for bicycles which are a little out of the ordinary. Consider folding bicycles, for example. These have all the characteristics of bikes in general, but they also have a certain gadgety appeal, a recurrent theme in mail order. Audio equipment
The mail order appeal of audio equipment is as for many other items which need to be used by the customer before he knows it has the qualities he really wants. Buying any sort of audio equipment in a high street shop is always a lottery: it’s easy to judge which machines look good and have the range of features one seeks, but judging the crucial quality of sound is virtually impossible in the noisy, bustling environment of a shop. The essence of the mail order appeal is Try it in the quiet of your home; return it if dissatisfied. Continue reading Mail Order, Hot Sell Merchandises!…

The nature of some products may be clearly indicated simply by naming them, eg wellington boots, wine bottles, handbags, loft ladders, watering cans, and so on. Other less common products may need lengthy descriptions. Continue reading How easily may the product be advertised?…

Anything that reduces the customer’s cost or risk or difficulty in ordering, or increases the value or rarity of what he gets for his money, is likely to improve the number of orders received. The main inducements are represented by the price of the product itself and the terms of payment. But other minor inducements may just tip the balance your way. Not all of them can be used in all forms of advertising. Your common sense will tell you what is and isn’t possible — you obviously can’t include an order form in a classified advertisement, for example. Is there a market for the product?

It is unwise to choose a product for which you cannot see an active, existing mail order market in the same or related items. This is the other side of the uniqueness coin. A product without competitors may also be without customers. If you have a unique product that would interest stamp collectors, for example, then — on this score at any rate — you have no problem because you will easily find a number of magazines that carry mail order advertising for stamp collectors. But where would you advertise a product for illiterate left-handed grandmothers, however useful it might be? Continue reading Is there a market for the product?…
