This is a service business which at first sight seems an impossible one to run by mail. Yet there are mail order businesses which have been offering such a service for years.

You need to define the service you offer very clearly. Men’s clothing is preferable to ladies’ clothing because it is less subject to the vagaries of fashion. There are two ways of offering the service, and both may be used at the same time. Offer to make up shirts, for example, or trousers or suits either by inviting clients to send you an old garment which you undertake to copy in a material of their choice, or by asking the client to supply you with detailed measurements from which you make a finished garment to the client’s chosen pattern and in his chosen material.

The more you can standardise the service, the easier it will be for you. You need to stock some materials and must be able to supply returnable sets of specimen materials from which your customers can choose. The narrower the choice, the easier your stock and supply problem, but the less attractive your service to clients; striking the right balance is one of the required skills.

Goods are easily packed and mailed with a good price/weight ratio. Provided you are a competent tailor, after-sales problems should be few, and such as there are should be easy for you to deal with.

Follow-ups include the sale of other clothes — possibly including ready-made clothes — and a repair and alterations service for clients’ existing clothes.
